VS. EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL

VS. EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL

Luck.  All luck.  I stuck my camera in the middle of the huddle and fired off about ten shots.  That’s all I can say about this picture.  A flash would have helped, but I wasn’t trying to blind anyone.  I know there’s a way I can do it without burning the teams retna.  We’ll see how it works out next time.

HOLIDAY ROCK TOURNAMENT IN LAS VEGAS, NV

HOLIDAY ROCK TOURNAMENT IN LAS VEGAS, NV

I have a system that I use for covering games for my documentary on the Findlay College Prep team.  Since I’m by myself, and I’m responsible for getting video, audio and still images, I break the game up in to quarters.  Usually I spend the entire first half shooting video.  Findlay hasn’t lost a game this season, and when they win it’s usually by a large margin.  So by the 3rd quarter the game is over, and the passion that was present in the first half is gone.  I’m not saying they don’t play hard in the second half, because they do.  But by the end of the 3rd quarter, Findlay has put their opponent away and the game is basically over.  SO, I like to get all the emotion that’s present when the game is relatively close on video in the first half.  This picture was taken in the championship match of the Rock Holiday Tournament against Rice (NY).  I stood behind the trophies they had set up in the corner and waited for someone to take a jumpshot.  It took a few frames, but I finally got one that resembeled the model on the trophy.

SAN FRANCISCO GRAFFITI

SAN FRANCISCO GRAFFITI

It was raining in San Francisco, CA a few weeks back.  I was riding with some friends when we saw a huge Christmas mural at the corner of 6th & Howard.  I said out loud like a lot of people, “Man, that would make a good picture.”  I think that a lot but I don’t always say it.  Next thing I knew my friend Monica pulled the car over.   Everyone in the car was just looking at me, so I guess that was my cue to get out of the car to take pictures.  This is one of the shots I got.  This is graffiti artist king157.  Click HERE to see some more of his work.

The team changed up locker rooms for the game against Ransom Everglades, a prep squad from Florida.  While this new locker room didn’t provide the dramatic lighting, it did give me a mirror to work with, which was nice.  I think this room doubles as a dance studio for the school.  While Coach Peck was preparing the guys for the second game in the Rock Holiday Tournament, I shot this image.  I like how the bar masks their faces, but you still have a feel for who is who.

MONICA & BJ CELEBRATE AN ANNIVERSARY

MONICA & BJ CELEBRATE AN ANNIVERSARY

I’ve known Monica for over five years.  A D.C. native with a deep love for her hometown and Pete Rock production.  Three years ago she developed a crush on a beatmaker and photographer.  Today Monica and BJ celebrate their anniversary while next year we will all celebrate their wedding.  I took this picture on an overcast day San Francisco a couple weeks back as we were walking the streets.  Sometimes it’s the simple yet familiar body gestures that make a solid picture.

BJ IN SF

BJ IN SF

I’ve started looking for more quiet moments in my photography.  I find that I shoot better in situations where there’s a lot going on, but when it’s quiet and calm, I struggle.  So in my efforts to work on my weaknessess, I’ve been trying to shoot enviromental portraits that reflect subtle sounds.  This is my friend BJ.  He’s a beatmaker, video editor and photographer in D.C..  I took this picture at the Hilton in downtown San Francisco while we were waiting for our friends to arrive so we could head out to Amoeba Records (one of my favorite spots).  I had a shot that was closer, but looking at both images I enjoyed the space in this picture.  You can check out some of his work (photos and music) at his website Diesel St.

MCCARRAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

MCCARRAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

I hate being late for a flight, so I’m always sitting at the gate early when I travel.  This past weekend I went to San Francisco to hang with some friends.  I took this picture while I was waiting for my flight to leave.  I’ve never really traveled around the holidays like this, so it was strange to see McCarran so crowded.  There wasn’t any trick to this picture.  I just placed the camera on the ground and waited for some people to walk by.  This was the best of the group.
